The plant gets access to water and nutrients from a much larger area of soil than its own roots could ever reach. In return, the plant feeds the fungus with sugars produced through photosynthesis.

Why does this matter for Indian farmers?
Indian agricultural soils have taken a beating over the last few decades. Repeated use of chemical fertilizers has degraded soil organic matter, killed off beneficial microorganisms, and left many farms with soil that needs more and more input every year just to produce the same yield.

Which crops does it work for?

The one category where mycorrhiza doesn’t help is the Brassica family — mustard, cabbage, cauliflower, and related crops. These plants don’t form mycorrhizal associations naturally, so applying it won’t give you any benefit there.
How do you use it?
The application is straightforward. There are a few ways to apply mycorrhiza depending on your situation:
Seed treatment: Mix mycorrhiza powder with seeds before sowing. Simple and effective for field crops.
Seedling root dip: Dip seedling roots in a mycorrhiza slurry before transplanting. Particularly useful for vegetable crops and for reducing transplant shock in nursery plants.
Soil application: Mix into the potting mix or apply directly to the soil around the root zone before planting. Works well for fruit trees, ornamentals, and container plants.
Drip application: Dissolve in water and apply through drip irrigation lines. Practical for large-scale farms with irrigation infrastructure.
The key thing to remember is timing — mycorrhiza works best when it’s introduced at or before planting. Applying it to established plants helps, but you get the strongest results when the fungus can colonise the roots from the beginning.
What about chemical fertilizers — can you use both?
Yes, but with some care. High doses of phosphate fertilizers like DAP can actually suppress mycorrhizal activity — the plant gets so much phosphorus from the chemical source that it doesn’t develop the fungal relationship it would otherwise form. If you’re transitioning to mycorrhiza, gradually reducing your phosphate chemical input and replacing part of it with bio fertilizer tends to give better long-term results.
